Resolution Circle, EBDA partner to create a one stop shop for artisanal and technical training


May 2020, Johannesburg: Resolution Circle, a training hub that partners with local industry to upskill workers, has announced a strategic collaboration with the Ergo Business Development Academy (EBDA) in order to be able to provide organisations with a comprehensive range of accredited artisanal and technical training courses that span the breadth of the qualifications spectrum.

We had been looking for an external provider to help improve our capability in terms of
offering apprenticeships. Over time, we were presented with an opportunity to work with
EBDA in order to complement our traditional strength in technical training with their ability to
develop high-calibre artisans for local industries,” says Gideon Potgieter, CEO of Resolution

EBDA, based in Ekurhuleni, offers various N-level courses, engineering skills programmes and short courses, and engineering learnerships & apprenticeships in a variety of trades. The Academy is fully accredited as a Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college. This accreditation is with the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations that operates under the auspices of the Department of Higher Education and Training. The accreditation allows EBDA to work with all major Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) as a Training Provider as well as a Decentralised Trade Test Centre.


As per the collaboration agreement, EBDA’s parent organisation will be responsible for funding the facilities and management up until May 2022, while Resolution Circle will take over the daily operations and facilitation of courses.  


Work-based training for apprentices 


According to Potgieter, Resolution Circle has historically had a strong presence among participants doing engineering diploma courses, which are broken down into two years of theory, and a final year of Work Integrated Learning. While the organisation was looking to cater for students at a TVET level too, it lacked the experience and accreditation in the artisanal space. Potgieter explains that apprentices typically do their trade theory at a TVET college, before going to an artisan training institution - such as EBDA - to complete their workshop-based training. Once this is done, they need on the job training at a host employer if they are to complete their qualification.


As such, it is critical for any training centre that is involved with apprenticeships and
developing artisans to have relationships with a wide variety of host employers, which are
usually private corporations, but in some cases the government - be it municipalities or state-
owned entities. With its established track record and recognisable industry presence,
working with EBDA helps us strengthen our presence in the area of artisanal training
overnight,” says Potgieter.

Comprehensive range of accredited courses

According to Piet Pistorius, Director and Academy Manager at EBDA, following changes within the structure of the organisation, they decided to look for another organisation to collaborate with. Resolution Circle was the ideal choice due to its presence in the public higher education sphere, its affiliation with University of Johannesburg, the institution’s ability to offer courses with higher NQF levels, and access to funding for participants. The strategic collaboration would allow both organisations to combine their strengths - Resolution Circle’s experience and background in technical training, and EBDA’s proven capability in developing highly-skilled artisans.


This is hugely beneficial for EBDA as we previously were mostly focused on qualifications
with NQF Level 3 or 4, but companies were increasingly looking for training interventions
that span the full spectrum of NQF qualifications. This collaboration means that we can offer
our combined customer base an unmatched variety of accredited technical and artisanal
training programmes that ranges from NQF 2 to NQF 8, and grow the number of participants
in our programmes” says Pistorius.

The National Qualifications Framework is a system to record and describe qualifications. For example, NQF Level 3 and 4 are equivalent to their respective National Certificate (Vocational) levels(typically obtained from a TVET), while NQF level 5 is a National Diploma (also from a TVET), NQF level 6 is a National Diploma (from a University of Technology or Comprehensive University), NQF Level 7 is a Bachelor's Degree, and NQF Level 8 is a Honours’s degree, typically obtained from a University.

EBDA covers the full cost of the training, N-courses (where required), stipends, PPE and toolboxes. As EBDA is a training centre, we cannot provide the practical on-the-job training that is required to complete an apprenticeship. We therefore appeal to companies nation wide to assist us with this at no cost, and join hands with us in our strive to assist the youth of today to have a brighter future.

    Keletso Abram Ditesgo, now 38 years of age and a member of the Kwa-Thema community near the Ergo plant, wanted to further his studies when he finished school but his parents could not afford to realise his dream.

  • 16Dedicated Mr Mabe graduates at 49!

    When Impala Platinum learner Elias Mabe was first sent to EBDA, he was illiterate. He was enrolled onto our ABET programme and completed his NQF Level 1 in 2011. After spending some time in and around EBDA's training workshops, Mr Mabe decided that he wanted tp try his hand at boilermaking. He was assessed by EBDA's technical training superintendent and advised that he would need to complete his full N2 if he wanted to enrol onto a boilermaking learnership and eventually sit a trade test.

    The issue of skills portability is highly relevant for the economic and social development of our workforce due to the rapid changes in technology, the global market and a continously evolving work organisation, particularly within the mining industry in South Africa. The high levels of youth unemployment and international migration also add to this predicament. As a result, it is becoming more and more essential that workers have relevant and verifiable skills in order for them to gain access to job opportunities and to adjust to the forever changing job market. Employers' ability to select the workers they need depends on them having access to clear information regarding those workers' type and level of skill. This means that skills need to be transferable between jobs and easily recongnised by employers i.e., portable.

    In 2012 EBDA introduced a Maths and Science Support Programme, designed to support educators and learners within the study environment, into a number of East Rand community schools.

    EBDA officially widened its services to include that of a Merseta decentralised trade test centre for all engineering trades excluding the Rigging and Motor Mechanics trades with effect from February 2014.

A maths and science specialist, Mr Eric Mnisi, an educator with a most impressive track record, has been employed to head up the Maths and Science Centre.

  • 27EBDA achieves another milepost

    EBDA achieved another major milepost in the evolution of its business model when the first batch of engineering apprentices wrote their trade tests. Five learners wrote their trade tests in the electrical and fitting trades, all of whom were found competent in their first attempt at sitting their trade tests. EBDA is proud of the fact that although the numbers are still small we have achieved a 100% pass rate and we will do whatever it takes to maintain this level of excellence. A further 16 learners are expected to sit for their trade tests within the next six weeks.


    When ERPM’s underground operations closed in 2008, some employees lost their jobs. However DRDGOLD did not send them off to find new jobs without offering help.

    On the 19th March 2010 EBDA achieved another significant milestone in its delivery of human resource development initiatives for its primary client, Ergo Mining Pty Ltd. Four engineering aides from the Ergo plant received their certificates of competence for the completion of the in-house Engineering Aides Certificate. This certificate forms part of the National Certificate in Engineering NQF level 2 qualification. The successful candidates are Steven Nkabende, Chris Matiso, and Jan Mogotlane


    EBDA has recently signed a Service Level Agreement with Masana Business Solutions who will provide EBDA with Business Consultants who will provide the backbone of the support to new entrepreneurs  that have graduated from the 9 month long New Venture Creation Learnership.


    After a successful scope extension audit carried out by the MQA on the 12th November, EBDA was awarded full accreditation by the Mining Qualifications Authority in all areas for which it applied for accreditation.

    A group of 11 employees from the Crown Gold Recoveries and Ergo operations were rewarded for their hard work on the Junior Leadership Programme (JLP) when they received their certificates and awards from Mr Niel Pretorius at a cocktail function held at the Crown Recreation club recently.

  • 37First batch of learners graduate from the ERPM re-skilling programme

    The first group of 50 former ERPM employees who attended a re-skilling programme in basic welding techniques completed their programme at the Ekurhuleni Businesss Development Academy on 20 July 2009. All learners were also trained in Basic Business Skills prior to their technical re-skilling.
