The overall Apprentice of the Year 2016 award was given to THULANI JOHANNES MAISELA. We would like to take this opportunity to wish him every success in his future career. If he continues his career as he did his apprenticeship, he can only expect many years of success.

    Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) is a government initiative aimed at redressing past discrimination against the previously disadvantaged groups, enncompassing not just Blacks, but Coloureds, Indians and the Chinese populations of South Africa.

    EBDA is registered as a non-profit company with approximately 95% of its beneficiaries being drawn from the above-mentioned previously, disadvantaged youth groups.

    In BEE sensitive sectors, this achievement gives EBDA a competitive edge in the current SA market for a number of reasons.

    At EBDA we choose to celebrate our top learners' hard work, enthusiasm and success at our annual learner end of year function. We believe that the support, life skills and managerial interest that we show in our learners goes a long way beyond just providing them with a technical skill.


  • 7Today's youth, tomorrow's entrepreneurs

    The Enterprise Clubs Programme is another unique initiative that is driven by EBDA and funded by Ergo Mining (Pty) Ltd. Although launched in 2012, the programme has transformed itself over the years and offers young entrepreneurial-minded individuals the opportunity to "get a taste" of the entrepreneurial life and decide for themselves if this is an option for their futures.

    For those of you who might not understand exactly what this means, it is important to understand the history of artisan development in South Africa and the legislation underpinning it, compared to new legislation, the new qualification and training practices.

    The South African mining industry recognises the need to invest in its skills base through training and development. This is vital as the provision of top-class training and development enhances employee safety and productivity. Only a skilled and motivated workforce can implement and deliver a business strategy and quality service. By offering meaningful and stimulating work and opportunities for personal development, the industry is able to attract and retain the best talent. Human resource development is also an important means of social transformation in the workplace. In short,the development of employee skills is integral to a sustainable and successful business.

  • 11National Artisan Moderation Body (NAMB) and the new trade test process

    A lot of confusion exists around the historical artisan training programme that largely developed into a sector-based approach, new legislation and emerging approaches to artisan training moving towards a national non sector-based system.

    Up to the implementation of 26D of the Skills Development Act (SDA) on a October 2013, artisan development was legislated in the Manpower Training Act (MTA) 1981.

  • 12Hosting engineering apprentices for free!

    EBDA plays a big part in the uplifment of skills in the local Ekurhuleni communities. One of these initiatives is the recruitment of community youth onto various engineering apprenticeships. EBDA covers the full cost of the training, N-courses (where required), stipends, PPE and toolboxes. As EBDA is a training centre, we cannot provide the practical on-the-job training that is required to complete an apprenticeship. We therefore appeal to companies nation wide to assist us with this at no cost, and join hands with us in our strive to assist the youth of today to have a brighter future.

    The Ergo Business Development Academy (EBDA) takes great pride in awarding some of its apprentice students for excellence in the year 2014. These awards strive to ensure that achievements don't go unrecognised and that learners are recognised for their hard work and dedication to learning.


    Keletso Abram Ditesgo, now 38 years of age and a member of the Kwa-Thema community near the Ergo plant, wanted to further his studies when he finished school but his parents could not afford to realise his dream.

  • 15Dedicated Mr Mabe graduates at 49!

    When Impala Platinum learner Elias Mabe was first sent to EBDA, he was illiterate. He was enrolled onto our ABET programme and completed his NQF Level 1 in 2011. After spending some time in and around EBDA's training workshops, Mr Mabe decided that he wanted tp try his hand at boilermaking. He was assessed by EBDA's technical training superintendent and advised that he would need to complete his full N2 if he wanted to enrol onto a boilermaking learnership and eventually sit a trade test.

  • 16EBDA offers portable skills training

    The issue of skills portability is highly relevant for the economic and social development of our workforce due to the rapid changes in technology, the global market and a continously evolving work organisation, particularly within the mining industry in South Africa. The high levels of youth unemployment and international migration also add to this predicament. As a result, it is becoming more and more essential that workers have relevant and verifiable skills in order for them to gain access to job opportunities and to adjust to the forever changing job market. Employers' ability to select the workers they need depends on them having access to clear information regarding those workers' type and level of skill. This means that skills need to be transferable between jobs and easily recongnised by employers i.e., portable.

  • 17EBDA sponsors calculators to a number of East and West Rand Schools

    In 2012 EBDA introduced a Maths and Science Support Programme, designed to support educators and learners within the study environment, into a number of East Rand community schools.

  • 18EBDA receives accreditation as a Merseta decentralised trade test centre

    EBDA officially widened its services to include that of a Merseta decentralised trade test centre for all engineering trades excluding the Rigging and Motor Mechanics trades with effect from February 2014.

  • 19EBDA upgrades its workshops

    Over the past year, EBDA has invested a lot of time and money in upgrading its workshops, so as to ensure that our learners are exposed to the highest standard of training in the country.

  • 20EBDA selected for DMR and MQA project

    EBDA has been selected as the preferred training provider for a project supported by the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR), the Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.

  • 21The EBDA Lodge opens its doors to the public

    Especially targeted at students attending training institutions or colleges in the East Rand as well as contractors working at companies in the area, the EBDA Lodge has opened its doors to individuals other than just our own students.

  • 22EBDA launches the Enterprise Clubs Programme

    As another means of addressing South Africa’s growing unemployment rate, EBDA has rolled out a new initiative called the Enterprise Clubs Programme which was launched in 2012.

  • 23EBDA extends its Maths and Science Programme to include Accounting

    Since establishing its Maths and Science Centre of Excellence, EBDA has seen a vast improvement in the Maths and Science grades in the local schools that have been targeted. The programme has seen such success that the Centre has decided to replicate a similar programme for Accounting with effect from May 2013.

    South Africa has moved past the point of job creation and needed to move into creating "job creators", surface gold-mining company DRDGold CEO Niël Pretorius said on Thursday.

    Speaking at the company's first-quarter results presentation, he said that social capital has become the responsibility of every South African to ensure the future of the next generation.

    EBDA has recently launched another implementation leg of the vision held for the Academy. This entails the establishment of a Maths and Science Centre of Excellence. A maths and science specialist, Mr Eric Mnisi, an educator with a most impressive track record, has been employed to head up the Maths and Science Centre.

  • 26EBDA achieves another milepost

    EBDA achieved another major milepost in the evolution of its business model when the first batch of engineering apprentices wrote their trade tests. Five learners wrote their trade tests in the electrical and fitting trades, all of whom were found competent in their first attempt at sitting their trade tests. EBDA is proud of the fact that although the numbers are still small we have achieved a 100% pass rate and we will do whatever it takes to maintain this level of excellence. A further 16 learners are expected to sit for their trade tests within the next six weeks.


    When ERPM’s underground operations closed in 2008, some employees lost their jobs. However DRDGOLD did not send them off to find new jobs without offering help.

  • 32First engineering aides graduate from EBDA

    On the 19th March 2010 EBDA achieved another significant milestone in its delivery of human resource development initiatives for its primary client, Ergo Mining Pty Ltd. Four engineering aides from the Ergo plant received their certificates of competence for the completion of the in-house Engineering Aides Certificate. This certificate forms part of the National Certificate in Engineering NQF level 2 qualification. The successful candidates are Steven Nkabende, Chris Matiso, and Jan Mogotlane


    EBDA has recently signed a Service Level Agreement with Masana Business Solutions who will provide EBDA with Business Consultants who will provide the backbone of the support to new entrepreneurs  that have graduated from the 9 month long New Venture Creation Learnership.


    After a successful scope extension audit carried out by the MQA on the 12th November, EBDA was awarded full accreditation by the Mining Qualifications Authority in all areas for which it applied for accreditation.

    A group of 11 employees from the Crown Gold Recoveries and Ergo operations were rewarded for their hard work on the Junior Leadership Programme (JLP) when they received their certificates and awards from Mr Niel Pretorius at a cocktail function held at the Crown Recreation club recently.

  • 36First batch of learners graduate from the ERPM re-skilling programme

    The first group of 50 former ERPM employees who attended a re-skilling programme in basic welding techniques completed their programme at the Ekurhuleni Businesss Development Academy on 20 July 2009. All learners were also trained in Basic Business Skills prior to their technical re-skilling.
